Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Situated on the eastern shore of the Dominican Republic, dubbed the “Coconut Coast”, Punta Cana is one of Latin America’s most popular tourist destinations. Here, from Uvero Alto in the north to Cap Cana in the south, you’ll find one of the Caribbean’s longest white sand coastlines – over 50 kilometers (30 miles). Within this stretch of idyllic white sand beaches and iridescent turquoise waters, are many of the nation’s best marinas, all-inclusive resorts and boutique hideaways. All offer the luxurious comforts expected in a beachfront paradise. Plus, in addition to the beautiful beaches and 5-star amenities, there is a host of complementary attractions. These include some of the country’s top health spas, exclusive golf courses, world-class diving, deep sea fishing, and more.
Although Punta Cana has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year, the area does experience dry and rainy seasons, and there is a distinction between the hotter and cooler times of year. The most popular times to travel to Punta Cana, therefore, are the winter and early spring months – from December to April – when there is less rainfall and slightly lower temperatures. Summer, on the other hand, can get quite warm, humid and wet. That said, during the dry season (December to April), the resorts experience more crowds, which is reflected in higher hotel rates. Therefore, for a quieter time of the year with better room rates and more one-on-one attention from hotel staff, November and early December (right before the high season), may be a preferable time for some.
Serving the resort area is Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) – the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and second busiest in the Caribbean. While Punta Cana doesn’t have quite as many direct flights as Cancun, it currently offers non-stop passenger flights to 66 destinations in 26 countries, and continues to add additional nonstop flights every year. The airport is conveniently located, allowing visitors to reach most of the area’s hotels and resorts, quickly and affordably.
