Tbilisi, Georgia
Straddling both Europe and Asia, the Georgian capital of Tbilisi is one of the most charming cities on either continent. Perched on the banks of the Mtkvari River against a striking mountainous backdrop, it is one of the world’s oldest settlements (archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation dating back to 4,000 BC). From its ancient fortress walls to its buzzing new luxury boutiques, this East-meets-West city offers something for everyone. An eclectic mix of architecture, world-class food and wine (with a super-affordable price tag), rejuvenating thermal baths, medieval history, and of course, small-town hospitality (from the proud, but humble Georgian locals).
While Tbilisi enjoys pleasant weather throughout the year, the best times to visit are May-June and September-October. Late spring to early summer in Georgia, especially in the lowlands around the capital, is a brilliant treat of blooming flowers and local festivals. Plus May and June generally have warm but comfortable temperatures that precede the mid-summer heat and humidity. In the autumn, temperatures are again ideal, plus its harvest time, which produces an unbelievable bounty of freshness and flavors for anyone with a fondness for Georgia’s world-famous food and wine.
Despite being on the fringes of Europe, Tbilisi is relatively accessible from most parts of the world. The Georgian capital is served by the Tbilisi International Airport (TBS), which receives flights from throughout Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. The most frequent flights are from Turkey and the Gulf States.
